Each week, the Archives features a woman who has been a groundbreaker at the Smithsonian, past or present, in a series titled Wonderful Women Wednesday.
Molly Fannon was the director of Smithsonian’s Office of International Relations and Global Programs from 2013 to 2019. In this position, she served as the lead representative for international programs related to biodiversity conservation, climate change research, cultural heritage preservation and recovery, cultural tourism and education, and beyond.
Prior to becoming director, Fannon worked as a consultant for the Smithsonian’s International Museum Professional Education Programs in Abu Dhabi, Oman, and Singapore from 2009 to 2013.
Fannon earned her bachelor’s degree in American and Latin American Studies from the University of Virginia. As a Fulbright Scholar in 2004, she worked with the government of Argentina to define cultural tourism and historic preservation strategies for Buenos Aires' historic public cemeteries.
